Canalling

in Florida

The quiet adventure is yours when you take the tiller of your own Lockmaster canalboat. A full week of tranquil nights and vagabond days awaits you on the waterways of South Florida. From the Gold Coast through legendary Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico, you'll discover the perfect getaway aboard a Lockmaster canalboat, where you are the Captain.

Your Lockmaster awaits you in the unspoiled, Main Street community of Pahokee on the shore of legendary Lake Okeechobee in western Palm Beach County. Choose a westbound route turning first south to follow the Rim Canal around the big lake. The small cities and towns offer pleasant tie-ups and old-fashioned downtowns.

Or head east. Leave the lake at the big lock at Port Mayaca and continue up the quiet St. Lucie Canal. Truck farms, cattle ranches and citrus groves line the waterway. Near the east coast, Stuart is the sailfish capital of the world. Downtown offers a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants and a fine municipal dock.

At the mouth of the St. Lucie River, you again have choices. Spend a day cruising through the subtropical jungle of the North St. Lucie River. Travel north on the Intracoastal Waterway into manatee country to Ft. Pierce, Vero Beach and Melbourne. Travel south, anchoring at Peck's Lake. Just a few yards away, you can greet the morning sunrise on a secluded ocean beach. Cruise further south through Hobe Sound, past the grand mansions of Jupiter Island. See the historic lighthouse at Jupiter Inlet and cruise do Lake Worth where you can visit Palm Beach, one of the world's most exclusive winter resorts.
