The history of Florida is brief in comparison to other parts of the United States and the world. While New England history can be measured in centuries, Florida history is measured in decades. Therefore, the museums and cultural centers spaced throughout Palm Beach County are able to present a living history. The past is nothing more than an extension of the present. One can readily examine the roots and see that the tree is living; thriving. A visitor can explore the "natural" history of Florida and see how the land, water, and animal population has evolved. That same visitor can
also see the steps that are being taken to preserve that natural evolution.
From the earliest inhabitants, to the visitors from abroad, to the vast migration from the North, it is also possible to witness in precise detail, the cultural evolution of Florida and Palm Beach County. Whether your interest is in Native Americans, European explorers, early settlers, or the land barons, you will be able to explore their role in Palm Beach County and its influence on the rest of the state.
Measurement of any great society must include a study of the arts, for it is within the realm of music, sculpture, painting, theatre, and dance that one can find its heart and soul. The Latin and European influences of the earliest settlers in Florida still flow through every aspect of the Florida culture. They are certainly most visible in our architecture, but they can also be discovered in vivid colors, and in the vibrant, lyrical style of the music. Choose from the many museums, environmental centers, and other facilities listed below. Each will pique your curiosity while helping to bring an understanding of the Florida culture.
Boca Raton Historical Society (71 N Federal Highway, Boca Raton, FL 33432) For more than 25 years, the Boca Raton Historical Society has been collecting, preserving, and presenting information and artifacts to the public. Through that process, hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors have learned the evolving history of Boca Raton. At the same time, the Historical Society has been a driving force in the community, fighting for historic preservation of meaningful architecture. Two historic landmarks that were restored by the Historical Society are the old Town Hall, and the F.E.C. Railway Station. Both buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
South Florida Science Museum (4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach, FL 33405"To excite curiosity and further the understanding and appreciation of science and technology." Charged with that mission, the South Florida Science Museum has consistently met and fulfilled that commitment. This 40 year-old focal point for the science interests of both children and adults offers hands-on interactive exhibits. Other features include the McGinty Aquarium with 8 salt-water displays, the Aldrin Planetarium Theater, the Gibson Observatory, the Motorola Science Theater, and a Main Hall that houses permanent and traveling exhibits, and a museum store.
The Norton Museum of Art (1451 S Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401) Approaching its 60th year, the Norton collection in many ways reflects the interests of its founders Ralph Hubbard Norton and Elizabeth Calhoun Norton. Mr. Norton once said, "Mrs. Norton's taste and mine were reasonably catholic. We were not partial to paintings of any one painter, or paintings of any special type, or any particular period. Our aim was to select pictures which gave us aesthetic satisfaction." A $23 million, 77,500 square foot expansion of the museum was completed in January of 1997.
