Saltwater and freshwater activities abound throughout Palm Beach County. Options include boating, fishing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, sightseeing and exploring. Visitors to Palm Beach County often bring all the equipment they require for these pastimes, but if you traveled light, you can still find everything you need to enjoy the water to its fullest. There are many unique features about the area that are readily available for everyone to enjoy. The Gulf Stream is a northerly ocean current of water that follows the East Coast of the United States. Transporting warm water from the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Stream comes closest to the United States along the Palm Beach County Coast Line. That proximity has created a natural habitat for both cold and warm water fish. For the sport fisherman, that assures an abundance of billfish and other big game fish. Restrictions on netting and a nearly universally accepted "catch and release" program have been effective in increasing fish populations. The extensive coral reef, the proximity of the Gulf Stream, numerous shipwrecks, and artificial reefs combine to make the Palm Beach County coastline a diver's paradise. The crystal clear water and abundance of sea life provide an exciting and entertaining venue. Lake Okeechobee is internationally known for bass fishing. It is also an incredibly beautiful home for millions of birds. It's 467,200 acres are seasonal and year round habitats for wading birds like ibis, herons and woodstorks, as well as diving birds like cormorants and anhingas. The lakeshore provides safe haven for caracaras, bald eagles, ospreys, hawks, and black vultures. If you enjoy watersports, Palm Beach County is the ideal destination for your next trip! The following pages have been divided into four broad categories, based on the diversity of both their recreational opportunities and the natural flora and fauna they represent. Also categorized under each area are the visitor support businesses that will aide you in enjoying these special areas.
