The close proximity of the Gulf Stream to the Palm Beach County coastline has created a natural phenomenon not to be found anywhere else. The difference in water temperatures has created a habitat for both warm and cold water species of fish and ocean life. Regardless what your marine interest might be, Palm Beach County is the place to go! For scuba divers, there are more than twenty natural and artificial reefs to explore. Sport fisherman can enjoy the challenge of reeling in big game fish that include sailfish, wahoo, etc. Discussion of Artificial Reefs
To create an artificial reef is to sink a man-made object in the sea, and then allow it to become part of the ocean ecosystem. Marine life has been quick to adapt to artificial reefs. In fact, barracuda have been known to stake out their territory on an artificial reef moments after a vessel has been scuttled. Recreational divers also adapt quickly to artificial reefs, often preferring them to the natural reef. Joe Clark of Ocean Divers charter boat operations (Key Largo, Florida) estimates that thousands of recreational divers dive on sites such as the USCG Duane each year. The aim of the artificial reef program is to attract thousands of divers to these sites, thus relieving human pressures on the natural reef ecosystem. For an up-to-date listing of reefs that are accessible from Palm Beach County, visit Past, present and future study of these reefs may help to make the ocean a more sustainable resource for marine animals and the ever-increasing demands of humankind.
