Recognized as one of Florida's important estuarine lagoon systems, the Lake Worth Lagoon encompasses over 450 square miles, and drains into the Lake Worth and South Lake Worth Inlets. It's importance as a fish and wildlife habitat, and its recreational values have received heightened attention since 1994. A comprehensive long-term management plan has been designed, accepted, and is being implemented. It has become a blueprint for future actions and includes wetland restoration, and construction of artificial reefs.

The end result is a repopulation of the lagoon with snook, sheepshead, crevalle, pompano jacks, white grunt, gray and lane snappers, tarpon and ladyfish.

Lake Worth Lagoon is also the location of two islands worthy of special attention. Peanut Island has been the beneficiary of a $4 million dollar restoration project that has turned a shallow-water habitat into a 79 acre island and water-oriented park for residents and visitors.

Peanut Island

In addition to primitive campsites, a fishing pier, boat dock with lighting and a park path around the perimeter of the island, an historic Coast Guard station built in 1936, and the Kennedy bunker built during the Cuban Missile Crisis are open to the public.

Lying within the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, 10900 State Road 703, North Palm Beach, FL 33408, and located in the northeastern section of Lake Worth Lagoon, Munyon Island is a recently restored 21 acre functional wetland habitat. The focus of the restoration was development of the island as an improved habitat for fisheries and wildlife. Discover the natural beauty and fascinating history of this island paradise. View the remnants of Dr. Munyon's famous and lavish Hotel Hygeia (c.1915) and see a variety of birds.
