A quick inspection of any map will show that Palm Beach County is bordered by water in the East and in much of the West. The Lake Okeechobee Waterway forms a boundary in the North. Numerous rivers flow throughout the County providing hundreds upon hundreds of miles of waterfront. In addition, the landscape is cluttered with large and small lakes. It truly is a water paradise. Palm Beach County is also a lot more. Vast stretches of agricultural land in the western part of the county intermingles with thousands of acres of land that have been set aside in environmentally protected areas where they will be protected from development. Managed by state, county, or water management district staffs, these lands provide a safe haven for an abundance of wildlife. Regardless what form of outdoor recreation you prefer, if it is environmentally and ecologically sound, you will find a place to enjoy it in Palm Beach County. Outdoor activities have been placed into four broad categories for the sake of efficiency. You will find information about Water, Backpacking and Hiking, History, and Wildlife Related activities on the following pages. Hopefully, you will find the information to be educational and beneficial as you plan your visit to South Florida.
