The South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Trail Association have teamed up to create a variety of hiking trails on protected land purchased by the Save Our Rivers program. The most visible example of that cooperation can be discovered in Northwestern Palm Beach County. Dupuis Reserve is a magnificent 21,875 acre stretch of land that marks the northernmost reaches of the Everglades. Careful removal of exotic vegetation and elimination of man-made drainage features has enabled this pristine piece of land to return to its natural state. Birders will enjoy seeing Bald Eagles in their natural habitat. Currently, there are twenty nests interspersed throughout this vast expanse of land. Campsites and extensive hiking trails make it possible for you to enjoy the natural beauty of South Florida. The Florida Trail Association has also been instrumental in creation of a trail that circumnavigates Lake Okeechobee. This trail is part of the Florida Scenic Trail, a 1,300 mile long trail that will ultimately extend from deep in the Everglades all the way to Pensacola. Dupuis Reserve is just one example of many undeveloped pieces of land that have been set aside for public use by the South Florida Water Management District under the SOR program. Others include West Jupiter Wetlands (1,922 acres) in West Jupiter, the Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee River (1,462 acres), Water Conservation Areas in Western Palm Beach County The John D. MacArthur State Park on Singer Island is the only state park within the borders of Palm Beach County. A beautiful piece of undisturbed tidal land located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, this park is a beautiful setting for those who wish to take a light stroll and observe the aquatic wildlife and shore birds that populate the dense foliage. Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation has worked diligently over the years to set aside environmentally sensitive land throughout the county for public use. The County Park System encompasses more than fifty parks. Two of them, Dyer and Cholee Parks have equestrian trails while six (Caloosa, Dyer, Glades Pioneer, John Prince, Okeeheelee, and South County Regional) parks have bike paths. Equestrian sports are extremely popular in Palm Beach County where at least one county park, Cholee Park on Forest Hill Blvd. in West Palm Beach, has been set aside for equestrian pursuits. Trails wind throughout the park and provide a variety of riding experiences. In addition, polo, show jumping, dressage, and sport riding are all popular. Canoe Outfitters of Florida - (8900 W. Indiantown Road, Jupiter, FL 33478) Located at historic Riverbend Park, Canoe Outfitters rents and sells canoes and kayaks. Their scenic location on the banks of the Loxahatchee River and transportation service enables enthusiasts to paddle the only federally designated Wild and Scenic River in Florida. Jupiter Outdoor Center (18095
Coastal A1A, Jupiter, FL 33477) is the ideal source for bicycle, canoe, kayak,
and electric boat rentals. It is strategically located near the mouth of the
Jupiter Inlet and also at the head of the A1A bicycle trail which follows the
coastline all the way to Juno Beach. Jupiter Outdoor Center also provides
guided tours of the most pristine natural areas in South Florida. Adventure Times Kayaks (521 Northlake Boulevard, North Palm Beach, FL 33408) has served the North Palm Beach community as a source for quality kayaks for several years. From the convenient Northlake Boulevard location, it is possible to easily access Lake Worth Lagoon for kayak tours of Munyon and Peanut Islands. Throughout the year, several extended guided kayak tours are scheduled. Catering to the requirements of novices to experts, kayakers from all over Florida have discovered that they can rely upon the skill, knowledge, and experience of Adventure Times Kayaks. Mounts Botanical Garden (531 North Military Trail, West Palm Beach, FL 33415) The Florida environment is extremely challenging for landscapers and gardeners. The extreme summer temperatures, long dry periods, aggressive weeds and insects, and poor soil quality make landscaping a nightmare. Mounts Botanical Garden is the only botanical garden focusing on South Florida's unique environment. Visitors will find a wide variety of native Florida plants in a natural setting. Master Gardeners are available to answer questions. Operating in a partnership with Palm Beach County and the University of Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences, Mounts is not only a beautiful park but also a superb educational facility.
