How do I become Christian?

What is a Christian?

Christians are people who have committed everything they know about themselves to everything they know about God.

When we read what God has said in the Bible, we discover the answer to the questions we have about our inability to be the person we know inside that we should be. The Bible says the cause or our problem is sin-attitudes and actions that separate all people from God, their heavenly Father. The Bible goes on to say that this separation caused by sin has been in existence ever since the beginning, when Adam and Eve rebelled against God's authority, and will continue throughout all eternity unless we discover God's own solution to the problem.

The Bible tells us that God loved us even in our rebellion and has made reconciliation with Himself possible. That means it is possible for sinful, rebellious people to know God as their own Father. This is true because of what God, in His grace did; He sent His own son, Jesus, to die on the cross for the sins of the world. Jesus died for our sins, not His own. The Bible says that Jesus, being God the Son, was free of sin and thereby was the perfect substitute for the sins of the world.

In other words, Christians are people who have confessed as truth what the Bible says is the problem - sin - and have committed themselves to what the Bible also says is God's solution - Jesus. Becoming a Christian is trusting in Jesus alone for salvation.

The Bible lets us know something else about God. God's Holy Spirit comes into our life when we put our trust in Jesus. God's Spirit living in us becomes the guarantee of our new life as a child of God. The Bible says it was the same Spirit's power that raised Jesus from the dead and guarantees resurrection and eternal life to everyone who trusts Jesus.

The Bible says it clearly in the New Testament: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31)

Let me summarize - In order to become a Christian, you must:

  1. Acknowledge that you are a sinner. (Romans 3:10, 3:23, Isaiah 53:6)
  2. Realize that there is a penalty for your sin. (Romans 6:23)
  3. Realize that you are a sinner and cannot save yourself. (Romans 5:12, John 8:44, Ephesians 2:8-9)
  4. Understand that God loves sinners. (Romans 5:8, Jeremiah 31:3, I John 4:8)
  5. Understand that God has already sent Jesus to die on the cross, to pay the penalty for our sin and to purchase a place in Heaven for all who will believe on Him. (John 3:16, Hebrews 7:25, Romans 10:9-10)
  6. Salvation is a FREE gift and available to all who will transfer their trust to Christ alone for eternal life. (Acts 16:31, John 3:16, Revelation 3:20)
  7. ALL who call on God for salvation - WILL BE SAVED! (Romans 10:13, John 1:12, John 6:47)

Becoming a Christian is as simple as praying a prayer similar to the following:

"Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and do not deserve eternal life. But I understand that you love me and died for my sins in order to purchase a place in heaven for me. Today, I turn from my sin and I transfer my trust for salvation, from myself, to you. I accept you as the resurrected and living Lord. Please come into my life as my Savior. I want to receive you as my Lord."

If you prayed that prayer, please let us know either by using the Contact-Us form or by calling (561)798-9300. We want to rejoice with you! There are also several things that you should do to grow in your relationship with Christ:

  1. Read your Bible daily to gain knowledge of God's plan for you. (1 Peter 2:2)
  2. Spend time with God in prayer. (Philippians 4:6)
  3. Get involved in the worship services of a church that teaches the Bible. (Psalm 122:1, John 4:24)
  4. Get to know other Christians and fellowship with them. (Acts 2:41-42)
  5. Tell your friends, relatives, associates and neighbors about what Christ has done for you and can do for them! (Matthew 10:32-33)
